DECOMMISSIONED INSIGNIA

ASSISTANT DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT RANK INSIGNIA
On 29 September 2011, under reorganization by Superintendent of Police Gary F. McCarthy, the rank of Assistant Deputy Superintendent was abolished. Prior to the abolishment a Assistant Deputy Superintendent wore the above spread eagle insignia to distinguish their rank. Each gold tone spread eagle was approximately 3/4" in height and 1 1/2" from wing tip to wing tip and was worn on the epaulets of the outer garment (e.g. Blouse, Refer, etc.). A spread eagle measuring approximately 15/32" in height and 31/32" from wing tip to wing tip was also worn on the collar of the shirt. A matching spread eagle was worn on both the left and right epaulets and collar.

On 29 September 2011, under reorganization by Superintendent of Police Gary F. McCarthy, the rank of Assistant Deputy Superintendent from the Bureau of Operational Services was abolished. Prior to the abolishment a Assistant Deputy Superintendent from the Bureau of Operational Services wore the above spread eagle insignia to distinguish their rank. Each silver tone spread eagle was approximately 3/4" in height and 1 1/2" from wing tip to wing tip and was worn on the epaulets of the outer garment (e.g. Blouse, Refer, etc.). A spread eagle measuring approximately 15/32" in height and 31/32" from wing tip to wing tip was also worn on the collar of the shirt. A matching spread eagle was worn on both the left and right epaulets and collar.

DEPUTY CHIEF RANK INSIGNIA
On 29 September 2011, under reorganization by Superintendent of Police Gary F. McCarthy, the rank insignia worn by a Deputy Chief was changed from a silver tone oak leaf depicted above to a single silver tone star. The silver tone oak leaf was approximately 1" in height and 1" in width and was worn on the epaulets of the outer garment (e.g. Blouse, Refer, etc.). A oak leaf measuring approximately 5/8" in height and 23/32" in width shall was also worn on the collar of the shirt. A matching oak leaf was worn on both the left and right epaulets and collar.

COMMANDER, COORDINATOR, & DIRECTOR RANK INSIGNIA
On 29 September 2011, under reorganization by Superintendent of Police Gary F. McCarthy, the rank insignia worn by Commander, Coordinator, and Director was changed from a gold tone oak leaf depicted above to a silver tone oak leaf. each gold tone oak leaf was approximately 1" in height and 1" in width and was worn on the epaulets of the outer garment (e.g. Blouse, Refer, etc.). A oak leaf measuring approximately 5/8" in height and 23/32" in width was also worn on the collar of the shirt. A matching oak leaf was worn on both the left and right epaulets and collar.

CARTER HARRISON / LAMBERT TREE MEDAL

Sometime after July of 1968 the Chicago Police Department changed the design of the Carter Harrison / Lambert Tree medal from the medal depicted above. Although the design of the medallion portion of the award did not change, the upper part changed from the hanging bar to a ribbon to match other existing Department awards. To see the current version CLICK HERE. The medal is granted to sworn members who have performed distinguished acts of bravery in the protection of life or property. The awards are presented in the form of a medal and ribbon bar on an annual basis by trustees of the respective award funds. This award is presented to Department sworn members in the form of a ribbon bar, medal, and certificate.

PATROL SPECIALIST LAPEL PIN
Beginning in 1975 and just prior to 1999 the Chicago Police Department utilized Patrol Specialists to train recruits once they had graduated from the Training Academy. The lapel pin above was issued to Officers that had the responsibility to train the new recruits. The pin was approximately 1" in height and 1" in width and was worn, centered, above the name tag on the right breast. Currently Officers charged with this responsibility hold the rank of Police Officer assigned as Field Training Officer and wear a single chevron stacked above a single rocker with the letters "FTO" positioned in the center. This rank insignia is worn on both the left and right sleeves.
